Several years ago, Debbie brought her father to Corpus Christi, Texas where CV-16, USS Lexington is moored and met her sister in law Kristin and me for a tour of the ship. As you approach the entrance to the ship on deck edge elevator #3, you can see a Japanese flag commemorating the spot where a kamikaze struck the superstructure. Jack told us that he had been sitting just below the point of impact 20 minutes before the aircraft hit.
We checked with the quarterdeck watch to see if there was a record of his service and as we walked back onto the hangar deck the quarterdeck watch announced over the loud speaker that "plank owner" Seaman Second Class Jack W. Haines was now aboard the Lady Lex. Several hundred people turned toward Jack and cheered and clapped.
It was my pleasure to have known you, Sir!

Uncle Jack, sorry I could not make it for your send off. I always remember you had big smile and good sense of humor. Thank you for your service to our country and all that you did. You will be missed.
