Rita Carol Polansky, 84, of Canonsburg, passed away on Friday, July 29 at her home in Canonsburg.
She was born on July 21, 1938 in Canonsburg, daughter of the late Frank and Mary Kosanovich Polansky.
She was a devoted Catholic and was a Eucharistic Minister and an active member of St. Oscar Romero Parish, St. Patrick Church.
Rita loved to travel and visited many far away lands. She was also an avid Pittsburgh Steeler Fan and animal lover.
She graduated from Duquesne University with a Masters Degree in Education. Early in her career she was a dedicated third grade teacher and reading specialist. She went on to be the Principal of Muse First Street and Borland Manor Elementary Schools. She also served as the Assistant Superintendent at the central office. During her career she supervised student teachers. She developed and supervised the summer reading and math ESEA Program. She helped develop a new model of teaching, utilizing technology at Borland Manor Elementary School. After her retirement she was a volunteer Principal at St. Patrick Elementary School. She touched the lives of countless children, always instilling a love of learning and reading.
Rita worked tirelessly to improve the community. She was on the Board of Directors of the Frank Sarris Library, a member of the Scholarship Committee for the Canon McMillan School District, volunteered with the Humane Society, North Strabane Township, St. Patrick's Church and Canonsburg Hospital.
Her leadership and generosity was a gift to all of the people and organizations she supported. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, August 3rd from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm at Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services, LTD, 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor 724-764-1000.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Oscar Romero Parish, St. Patrick Church on Thursday, August 4th at 10am with Father Richard Jones officiating. We request that everyone meet at the church.
Burial will take place immediately following in the St. Patrick Cemetery, Canonsburg.
