Joseph Raptosh, 92, of Canonsburg, formerly of Portage, died Saturday, January 18, 2020, peacefully at home.
He was born April 20, 1927, in Portage, a son of Andrew and Mary Wargo Raptosh.
Mr. Raptosh was a member of St. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Portage, where he was a member of the choir and a cantor.
He proudly served his country with the United States Navy, as a helmsman on USS Ardent (MCM-12) during WWII.
He worked at the A&P as a produce manager for many years, and later with the Next Corporation, Holtz Division, where he was a mutual fund and stock broker until his retirement at age 85.
He was a member of the American Legion, post 430, and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 131. He was the last surviving son of his immediate family, and he and all of his brothers were proud veterans.
Surviving are his sons, David B (Danelle) Raptosh, of Enola, Father Joseph Raptosh, of Canonsburg; his sisters, Agnes Mietta, of Greenville, Dolores Tillman, of Lake City, Michigan; grandchild, Anna (Shawn) Myers; 44 surviving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his spouse Dorothy (Perich) Raptosh, and his brothers and sisters, Andrew Raptosh, Mary Havrilak, Paul Raptosh, Julia Afton, Anna Raptosh, John Raptosh, George Raptosh, Catherine Weshalek, Edward Raptosh and Stephen Raptosh.
Great Panachida will be celebrated at 10am on Tuesday, at St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Friends will be received Wednesday 3-7pm, in the Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, 812 Main St., Portage, PA, 15946. Parastas will be held at 3pm on Wednesday in the Serenko-Claar funeral home. A Divine Liturgy will be held in the St. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, 143 Church Rd., Portage, PA, 15946; Thursday at 10am, followed by burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorials to St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church or St. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church.
