John L. "Jack" Obenour Obituary

John L. "Jack"` Obenour, 92, of Hickory, died Friday, June 4, 2021, in his home.
He was born August 2, 1928, in Moon Run, a son of Joseph and Kathleen McCusker Obenour.
Mr. Obenour was a member of the Venice Presbyterian Church, where he was an ordained Elder. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Prior to his retirement, he worked electrical maintenance at an atomic power plant for Duquesne Light. "Jack" or "Matey" as he was fondly known by family and friends was a member of the Hickory Lions Club, the American Legion, 902, and active with the Croatian Fraternal Union for many years.
On August 5, 1961, he married Catherine Brigich Obenour, who survives. Also surviving are his son, Joseph (Stephanie) Obenour, of Cuddy; daughters, Caitie (Robert Miller) Obenour, of Washington, Jeannie (Ron) Ruston, of Edmonds, Oklahoma, Nancy Davis, of Tulsa, Arizona; sisters, Joan (Robert) Stein, of McMurray, Gertrude (Walt) Ellenberger, of Haymarket, Virginia; sister-in-law, Patty Obenour, of Canonsburg; 5 grandchildren, Johnny Obenour, Brett Rustin, Mindi Price, Shelli Davis and Jacob Welsh; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Obenour, his sisters, Joy Willard, and Elizabeth Phillips, and his grandchild, Taylor Clark. In 1960, Jack and Catherine purchased Hornhead Farm and began a flock of Dorsett Sheep.  Jack loved the farm;  harvesting the grain and hay, enjoying the new born lambs and the solitude of the farm.  To the end, he was blessed to see the beautiful sun risings, the  moon and the stars from his bedroom window.

Sometimes the choice between farming and golfing collided, and more often golf won out.  He was an accomplished golfer, having 3 hole in 1's, at Quicksilver, Cambridge Springs, and Fort Cherry.  Although, his greatest achievement in golf was birdieing all four of the par three holes in one round, for a total score of 8.

Friends will be received Wednesday, 2-8 pm, at the Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services, LTD, 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor, 724-746-1000.

Burial will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, with full military honors accorded by the United States Navy and the VFW #191 Honor Guard.  Memorial donations can be made to the Croatian Fraternal Union Scholarship Foundation, scholarship@croatianfraternalunion.org in John's memory.
