On the early morning of May 7th, Christos N. Kapelonis passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 89 after a series of health issues.
He was a proud Cretan who loved to tell stories of his time in Crete as a young man.
He was a masterful dancer of the “trizali” which originated in the Amari region of Rethymno, where his village of Kouroutes was located.
After his service in the army, he met Joanna Tentomas and they were married in 1961.
They settled in Athens where Christos became a gardener at the Phaleron War Cemetery, maintaining the British section which houses nearly 3,000 members of the land forces of the Commonwealth who lost their lives during the campaigns in Greece and Crete in 1941 and 1944-1945.
Christos with his wife Joanna with their young family emigrated to New York City and subsequently to Washington Pennsylvannia to be with their children and grandchildren.
His green thumb proved fruitful in America; his annual vegetable garden was his best hobby.
He was also an avid hunter that never missed his target.
He is survived by his wife Joanna; his daughter Helene, son-in-law Stavros Semanderes, grandchildren Nicholas, Christos, Erene (George Manos); his daughter Chrisoula, son-in-law Kostas Adelianakis, grandchildren Anthony and Cleopatra (engaged to Joe Andromalos); his son Nick, former daughter-in-law, Christina, grandchildren Christos and Agape; his daughter Anastasia; his brother John Kapelonis and sister-in law Stella; his sister Anastasia Akoumianakis; and many nephews and nieces.
