Frank Anthony Cargiene, Sr., 90, of Canonsburg, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in his home.

He was born November 7, 1925, in Washington, a son of Gabriel and Mary Pasqua Cargiene.

Mr. Cargiene was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School, a 1947 graduate of the Waynesburg Flying School, and a 1948 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army, where he served in Ossenigo Italy during World War II, and received the Air Medal. Prior to his retirement, he was a steel worker at Universal Cyclops. In 1971, he furthered his education receiving his degree in Education and his coaching certification in 1979. He was a Red Cross Swimming Instructor during the 50's and 60's, and was the Washington County Water Safety Director from 1960-1970, as well as coaching swimming at West Allegheny High School and Canon McMillian High School. He taught swimming at all the local municipal and several private swimming pools. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed fishing and hunting for over 77 years.

Mr. Cargiene was an active member of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church. He was active with the American Legion, post 902, Veterans of Foreign Wars, post 191, S.N.P.J. lodge 138, the Washington County Italian American Society, and the Bowling Association. In 2009, he was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame, and at age 75, bowled a 300 game.

On October 4, 1948, he married his wife of 68 years, Sara Elizabeth Serenta Cargiene, who survives. Also surviving are his son, Frank Cargiene, Jr., and his wife Debora, of Eighty Four; daughter, Margaret Ottena, and her husband Barry, of Houston; 4 grandchildren, Frank Cargiene III, Nicole Cargiene, Christopher (Kristen) Ottena, John (Heather) Ottena; 2 great-grandchildren, Carter and Caroline Ottena; sister, Yolunda Cargiene Gladd, and her husband Joseph, of Mariana; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Rosemarie Cargini, Josephine Cargini Sensky, brother, Paul Carmen Cargiene.

Friends will be received Thursday 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Sollon Funeral Home, Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director, 724-746-1000.

Departing prayer services will be held in the Sollon Funeral Home, Friday, at 9:30am, followed by a Mass of Christian burial, in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg, Friday at 10am. Interment will follow in the Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray, with full military rites accorded by V.F.W. post 191.
